Knee update

As I mentioned before I've been having problems with my right knee. It started February 24 and has been getting worse every time I run. I decided it was time to see a doctor. I wanted someone to tell me what to do to get it well, so I can continue training for my half marathon in April.

Well, yesterday my physical therapist told me my I.T. band was very inflamed.
She has given me a pair of stretchy bands with a list of exercises/stretches to help strengthen my hips & the muscles around my knee. She also wants me to stop running for now.  Even though this is SO discouraging to me, I know she is right. The pain when I run & after I run is miserable.  I know I have to stop and get my knee better if there is any chance of running the half marathon in April. But, it discourages me. I'm worried I'm going to lose all the progress I made. I have worked so hard and for the first time in my life I enjoy running. And I'm actually good at it! I'm nervous my body may not be able to handle all this running.

I go back to the physical therapist next week. I'm hoping after a week of doing these exercises/stretches + no running there will be a big improvement and she will tell me I can continue training!

:( That's so weird how stuff like that happens. My Husband has really bad knees (both of them) and was told by his doctor that he would without a doubt need knee replacement surgery one day. I really hope things improve for you!

This happened to me after my first {and last} half marathon. The tissue in my knee was so inflammed that my orthopedic doctor recommended 4 advil, every 4 hours, up to 12 a day. Crazy, right? Sadly, I stopped running all together for awhile. But that was 4 years ago...and I still getting a shooting pain in my right knee after a run. Let me know if you find something that works!

oh no that is so sad!!! I know exactly how you feel, because this happened to me when I hurt my lower back and found out I had a herniated disc. I had to stop running too, and I felt so discouraged as well.

Hang in there, because the rest, and getting those muscles around stronger WILL get you back in shape to run again. I know it stinks, but it will get better :) Good luck!

I don't have a doubt in my mind that you will be back at it soon enough. Take time to rest & heal & you will pick up where you left off. It won't be easy but you are so driven that it won't take long for you to get back in the swing of things.

What about swimming? I've heard from SOO many women how hard running is on their bodies since it's such a high impact "sport"? Swimming is one of the best full body, low impact workouts!

You definitely need to listen to your doctor. I have a friend who is super into crossfit, and she injured her shoulder really bad and the doctor said to give it 6 months with no working out and she didn't listen worked out and now it's been over a year and still hasn't healed! I think you knee will be so much happier with you if you give it a few weeks of rest and then you can make progress again :) good luck!

Oh no! I could definitely see how this would be frustrating!! Just remember the most important thing is your health, so try not to be too discouraged!

Praying for a speedy recovery for you Valerie! I had a knee/shin injury after my last half marathon this past November. As hard as it was for me, rest really did solve all my problems. And too, in the interim the elliptical is a good alternative!

Just discovered your blog recently, and am enjoying reading. Didn't know yet that you are a runner! That's awesome. :) SO sorry to hear about your knee. My right knee is my problem area, too. Those Physical Therapists are awesome -- so I'm glad you've got someone looking after you! Rest up and do those exercises, and will be sending you good vibes to get back out there! Country Music Half in April?

:( Oh no! I hope your stretchy-band stuff helps. Having a bad knee, especially when you are an active person, is the pits. Hope you are better SOON!

It's better to be safe than sorry. You won't lose your progress. Just keep the drive, rest, recover and you'll be back to running in no time!

OH sweet sweet girl. DO yourself a favor and do everything your doctor says. Take it from someone who has BEEN there and done that. I failed to listen and my IT band issues turned into a 2 year battle with my shins.

Take time to rest and STRETCH STRETCH STRETCH! I PROMISE you will feel better if you do so. Take the time off and you will feel so much better.

Since I've been there, feel free to email with any questions or for motivation. xoxo

PT is a godsend! Seriously, be really good about doing your exercises and everything your PT says. I ran 10 miles on Sunday, for the first time EVER, with no pain! I'm still so happy about it that I could cry :) And I attribute it to PT! Best of luck with your exercises!

2 things- I am an occupational therapist, so although I don't as much about the lower extemities as a PT, I can tell you that you really do need to rest it and get it stronger. The other thing, I also have IT band syndrome and know the pain can be aweful! But after I was able to learn stretches and get my hips and knee stronger, I was able to train and run my first half marathon. Don't be too discouraged...it will get better!

I completely understand how you feel discouraged...but definitely listen to your body. You won't lose all the progress you've made. I took time off in between running my 5ks and my 10k. I didn't train like I should...and yes...it could have gone better than it did. But I finished! And you definitely don't want to cause permanent damage and then not be able to run at all! Glad you are getting it taken care of. ;) You are inspiring me to get back out there...but take care of yourself!

I really hope everything is going to turn out alright. Thinking of you!

:( :( Hope you get better soon! It's definitely important to take care of yourself first!

GIRL. I had IT band trouble when I ran crosscountry back in college, and eventually I had to stop running. It's SO rough!! I'll be praying that heals right up, so you can get back to pounding the pavement without pain.

Oh no! I hope your knee heals quickly. I know how painful that can be.

Tiffany said...

Oh noooo!!! I hope your knee gets to feeling better asap!!! I can't imagine how that feels!! Don't be discouraged Im sure you will be able to get right back into it when your knee heals.

Rachel Larson said...

I hope you get better very soon! Take advantage of that rest, you need it for how hard you're working! :)

Laura said...

Oh that's no good! I had to stop running because of nerve issues...it's so frustrating to finally be enjoying something and feel so good about it and then have to stop...I feel ya girl! But focus on getting better so you can rock your race in April!

Morgan Sanders said...

Valerie! I am so sorry to hear that!! Prayin you get better very very very soon and are still able to run your race. I have been struggling with hip pain!! Bahhh, it's sad when it's something we just learned to love!!!

oh no! this is no fun. hope it gets better super fast for you!

I hate you are injured- I can't imagine how heartbreaking this must be. But you're right- you are good at running, so I know you'll bounce back fast.

I don't know any better than your PT, but I've seen a lot of people (on blogs or in RW magazine) who have IT band issues who use foam rolling a lot. Check out Ali On The Run, she actually just recovered from the same problem!

I had really bad problems with my knee/hip in December... it's gone away completely (knock on wood) and I think it's from cross training? So maybe that will help? But I'm sorry to hear that :(:(
